On May 28, 2025, faculty members and students from the Department of Botany, Faculty of Science, Mahidol University, led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Sasivimon Swangpol and Asst. Prof. Dr. Panida Kongsawadworakul, were invited to serve as guest speakers in the “Rak Phong Phrai” Youth Nature Conservation Camp under the theme “All About Bananas”, held at Queen Sirikit Park, Chatuchak District, Bangkok, and Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park, Bang Kachao Subdistrict, Phra Pradaeng District, Samut Prakan Province. The camp welcomed 40 enthusiastic upper primary school students from Kasetsart University Laboratory School, who actively participated in various educational and fun activities. The department was also honored to have Assoc. Prof. Dr. Thaya Jenjittikul join in providing botanical knowledge and inspiring the young participants throughout the day. The camp featured four interactive learning stations, each designed to encourage curiosity and engagement with nature:
Station 1: Unlocking Banana Secrets – Exploring the diversity and value of bananas
Station 2: Imprinted Memories – Creating artistic prints using banana leaves
Station 3: How Sweet Is Sweet? – Investigating fruit sweetness through taste and observation
Station 4: Colorful Bracts – Learning about banana flowers and their botanical significance
Organized by the Queen Sirikit Park Foundation, the Rak Phong Phrai Youth Camp aims to foster environmental awareness and a love for plants among young learners in Bangkok and surrounding areas. The program will be held on three separate dates: May 28, June 5, and June 11, 2025. The Department of Plant Science is proud to contribute to youth education and hopes this hands-on experience will inspire the next generation to appreciate plant science and take part in environmental conservation.
